Vitamin C Skincare

What does Vitamin C do?

Vitamin C is said to be one of the most powerful antioxidants in the skincare world. It helps to fight against Free Radicals in the body. ( If you are unsure what Free Radicals & Antioxidants are make sure to check out my last skincare post on them - Free Radicals & Anti Oxidants Post

Vitamin C helps against the ageing process by diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It helps to keep our skin firmer by strengthening the collagen, it does this by building and strengthening tissue ( collagen is a connective tissue.) It will also help to reduce pigmentation in the skin.

Where do we find Vitamin C?

Much like Vitamin A, Vitamin C is found in both the foods we eat and in skincare products.

However our body does not store vitamin C so we must replace our supply everyday. It is also water - soluble which make its even harder to store as much of it can get excreted from our bodies.

If you are looking for Vitamin C in food form, look for citrus fruits and vegetables such as bell peppers, broccoli, cauliflower and spinach.

We can also find Vitamin C in many skincare products. Applying Vitamin C topically is extremely effective as it is going straight to the source.

What should you look for?

When you are looking for a skincare product with Vitamin C it is best to look for the following ingredients;

Ascorbic Acid / L - Ascorbic Acid / AA / Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate : These are the most common form of Vitamin C you will find in skincare products.

Rosehip / Grapefruit / Orange: These are botanical sources of Vitamin C.

When looking at skincare ingredients, generally the higher an ingredient on a list the higher the strength of the ingredient  in the product. If you find the ingredient you are looking for is listed in the bottom few, chances are it is not going to be very strong and you are nine times out of ten better off looking for another product!

Look for 10-20% of the ingredient in the product as this will result in quicker and stronger results in the skin. However many skincare products will not list the % so you can see how high it is on the list as mentioned above!! :)

Vitamin C is quite unstable. When it comes into contact with any sort of light/heat and air this can cause it to degrade. When choosing your product it is important to ensure the product has a dropper or a pumper, also make sure the packaging is dark and preferably a glass bottle.

How do you use?

You can find Vitamin C products in moisturisers, cleansers, serums etc.

You can use what ever product is preferable to yourself. I myself prefer serums as I find they target the face quickly and are most effective.

There is not set amount of Vitamin C to use in your skincare. When first starting off ensure you start off slowly as with any new product in your skincare routine as not to irritate the skin.

It is perfectly safe to use Vitamin C in the AM & PM of your skincare routine.

Products

Kinvara 24hr Rosehip Face Serum

I have actually been using this serum for the last couple of months and I have to say it is one of my favourites to put on at night time. There is Rose hips in this which is a form of Vitamin C and also Vitamin E which is another anti oxidant ( I am going to do a separate blog post on E so keep an eye out for that.)

Image Skincare Vital C Collection

If you are a fan of skincare then I am sure this is not your first time to hear of Image Skincare. Image Skincare is becoming increasingly popular and its not hard to see why - it delivers results. The Vital C collection is one of the brands most popular collections and consists of serums, moisturisers and masques. Each contain anti oxidant ingredients.

The Ordinary Skincare Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate Cream

The Ordinary Skincare is a relatively cheaper skincare brand, however it is known to deliver the same results as more higher end brands. Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is another form of Vitamin C. This particular product is 10% so it should deliver results quickly. It is also a lot cheaper than the other two brands I have mentioned so if you are stuck for money or do not want to splash out then this would be perfect for you.
